National or regional energy information system
The African Energy Commission (AFREC) supports African Union Member States and regional institutions in establishing and strengthening National and Regional Energy Information Systems (NEIS/REIS) to improve the availability, quality, reliability, and accessibility of energy data for evidence-based decision-making.
The activity aims to support countries and regional economic communities in developing sustainable energy information systems that enable the systematic collection, compilation, validation, management, analysis, and dissemination of energy statistics. These systems are designed to strengthen national and regional energy data management while ensuring alignment with AFREC methodologies, international statistical standards, and the requirements of the African Energy Information System (AEIS).
Through this activity, AFREC provides technical assistance and capacity building to Member States to assess existing energy information systems, identify data and institutional gaps, and establish or improve the necessary institutional, technical, and methodological frameworks. Particular attention is given to strengthening data collection processes, standardising energy indicators and reporting methodologies, improving data validation and quality assurance, and enhancing the capacity of national institutions to manage and use energy information.
The activity also promotes harmonisation of energy statistics across countries and regions, facilitating greater comparability of energy data and improving the regular flow of reliable national data into the AEIS. Where appropriate, AFREC supports the integration of digital platforms, databases, reporting tools, and analytical systems to improve the efficiency and sustainability of national and regional energy data management.
Key areas of support include:
- Assessment and establishment of National or Regional Energy Information Systems;
- Development and strengthening of institutional and technical frameworks for energy data management;
- Standardisation and harmonisation of energy data, indicators, classifications, and methodologies;
- Capacity building for institutions responsible for energy statistics and information management;
- Improvement of processes for energy data collection, compilation, validation, analysis, and dissemination;
- Alignment of national and regional systems with AFREC methodologies and international energy statistics standards;
- Strengthening data exchange and reporting between Member States, Regional Economic Communities, and AFREC;
- Integration and improved flow of national and regional energy data into the African Energy Information System (AEIS); and
- Promotion of the use of reliable energy data to support energy policy, planning, investment, monitoring, and decision-making.
The activity contributes to the development of a more coordinated and sustainable energy information architecture across Africa, strengthening the capacity of Member States and regional institutions to produce and use high-quality energy statistics and supporting AFREC's mandate to provide comprehensive and comparable energy information for the continent.
