Energy Information System and Statistics Programme

Energy Information System and Statistics Programme

The African Energy Information System (AEIS) is a decision-making tool which is comprised of a continental energy database and other energy information and data visualisation tools. The AEIS was created by AFREC in 2012 to coordinate Africa’s energy data collection, validation and dissemination at national, regional and continental level. The system facilitates exchange of energy information amongst African Union Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and other key stakeholders.

The AEIS is guided by the African Statistical Charter adopted by the 12th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 3, 2009. The charter calls for African policy makers to make statistics the basis for all policy formulation, programming, and monitoring and evaluation.

The AEIS structure is composed of the following data management tools: Energy data collection and visualization tools. The tools provide information ranging from energy balance and indicators, energy efficiency indicators for all end-uses, energy prices and taxes, power plants capacity installed, CO2 Emission and SDG7 Tracking.

Various energy publications are such as:

Energy statistics and database assists Member states, regional and international organization/institution to plan and make informed decisions related to energy development and accessibility, in cognisant of energy as a scarce commodity in Africa.

Through a capacity building programme, AFREC also support members state’s National Focal Points (NFPs) to manage energy data at country level, which are then consolidated into the AEIS.

The capacity building for the AEIS concentrate on the following:

  • Enhancing data collection at National level through collaborative efforts on knowledge sharing ad practices.
  • Mobilising resources and assisting MS to establishing National Energy Information Systems (NEIS).
  • Improving existing National Energy Information Systems (NEIS).
  • Continuous training programmes to enhance skills development on energy data statistics across member states.
  • Regional training for energy National Focal Points.
  • Training trainers of others in energy statics, data collection and reporting.

Key Activities & Initiatives

The African Energy Commission (AFREC) supports African Union Member States and regional institutions in establishing and strengthening National and Regional Energy Information Systems (NEIS/REIS) to improve the availability, quality, reliability, and accessibility of energy data for evidence-based decision-making.
